The European Commission’s harmonised monthly survey of Romanian consumer sentiment, for which Mercury Research conducts the national fieldwork. Tracks how households view the economy, their finances, and their spending intentions — a key barometer for market conditions.
The Consumer Confidence Survey is part of the European Commission’s Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys, run monthly across all EU member states. Mercury Research conducts the Romanian fieldwork for this programme, surveying a representative sample of consumers each month.
The survey tracks how Romanian consumers view the general economic situation, their personal financial position, unemployment expectations, prices, and their intentions to save or make major purchases. Results are expressed as balances — the difference between positive and negative responses — and feed into the Consumer Confidence Indicator, one of the components of the EU’s Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI). Because the methodology is harmonised across countries, Romania’s results are directly comparable with those of other EU and candidate countries, making the survey a key reference point for tracking economic sentiment over time and against regional peers.
As of March 2026, Romanian consumer confidence stood at -32 points, continuing a run of negative readings that reflects persistent caution among Romanian households about the economic outlook.
