Know the Market
Know the Market
DecisionMap – Usage & Attitude (U&A) Studies Customised usage and attitude studies tied to your marketing objectives, with a segmentation you can track over time
A systematic study of how, why, and when your customers buy — customised to your marketing objectives, your market, and your strategy process. Combines qualitative depth with quantitative rigour, and produces a segmentation you can track wave after wave.
Smarter U&A research, built for strategy, not just data.
We customise every U&A study around four things: your marketing objectives, your strategy process, your market’s specific dynamics, and your customers’ real perspective. The result: research that drives decisions, not just describes a market.
Our segmentation approach is also built for continuity — easy to replicate in future tracking studies, so you can measure strategy impact over time.
How it works
Align research design with objectives
Every U&A study starts with a structured conversation, not a template. Before any research design work begins, we align closely with your team to understand the marketing objective the study needs to serve — whether that's entering a new segment, defending share, repositioning a brand, or shaping a product roadmap.
We also take the time to understand how your strategy process works: who makes the decision, on what timeline, and in what format the findings need to arrive to actually get used. And we factor in what's already known about your market — competitive context, prior research, category dynamics — so the study builds on existing knowledge rather than starting from scratch.
The result is a research design tied to your specific strategic question from day one, rather than a generic study retrofitted to fit it afterwards.
Ensure relevance to the customer
Before a single quantitative question is drafted, we spend time with customers directly — through interviews or focus groups — to understand how they actually think and talk about the category, not how a standard template assumes they do.
This means surfacing the language, priorities, and trade-offs that matter to real customers, and testing them against the objectives set in the briefing stage. It also means catching blind spots early: attributes the client assumed were important that customers don't mention, or considerations customers care about that hadn't been on the radar at all.
The output is a set of customer-grounded attributes and usage occasions that anchor the quantitative questionnaire — so the survey that follows measures what genuinely matters to the market, not just what's easy to ask.
Build the strategy team's involvement
Strategy only gets acted on when the people responsible for it believe in the findings. So before the quantitative study runs, we create direct touchpoints between your strategy team and real customers — through joint sessions, observed interviews, or structured feedback loops.
This does two things at once: it sharpens the research design with first-hand input from the people who'll use it, and it builds genuine ownership within your team. By the time the data arrives, your strategists aren't seeing customers for the first time in a slide deck — they've already engaged with them directly.
The result is a strategy team that trusts the findings because they helped shape the questions.
Finalise the research design
With qualitative insight and client input in hand, we bring your strategy team together to finalise the research design. This is where the questionnaire, segmentation approach, and analysis plan are locked in — built to fit your internal strategy development process, not just industry convention.
This workshop ensures the quantitative study that follows is designed to answer the questions your team will actually face when it's time to build the marketing plan — not a broader, less actionable version of them.
The output is a confirmed research design ready to go into the field, with full buy-in from the strategy team that will use its results.
Extensive U&A survey with customers
This is the core fieldwork stage: an extensive U&A survey, run via CATI, CAWI, or a blend of both, depending on your market and audience. Because the instrument was shaped by the objectives, qualitative research, and workshop stages before it, it captures the specific information your strategy team needs — not a generic map of the category.
We measure usage patterns, attitudes, needs, and the attributes and occasions identified earlier, at a sample size and structure built for reliable segmentation.
The result is a robust, decision-ready dataset drawn directly from your customers.
Refine segmentation, combine insights
Once the data is in, we bring your strategy team back together to work through it collaboratively. This is where we refine the market segmentation, stress-test it against your commercial knowledge of the market, and pull together a complete list of the information needed to build the marketing plan.
Because your team combines their own market knowledge with the research findings in real time, the segmentation that emerges is one they've helped shape — not just one they've been handed.
The output is a segmentation and set of findings ready to translate directly into marketing plans.
Track results, build accountability
Strategy without accountability is just a plan on paper. Because our segmentation approach is designed to be easy to replicate, you can track how your strategy performs over time through future tracking studies — using the same lens, wave after wave.
This turns the U&A study from a one-off snapshot into an ongoing feedback loop: you can see whether the strategy is landing with the segments it was designed for, and adjust with evidence rather than guesswork.
The result is clear accountability for the strategy's real-world impact.
Consumer Confidence Survey (European Commission) EC's harmonised monthly barometer of Romanian household sentiment, fielded by Mercury Research
The European Commission’s harmonised monthly survey of Romanian consumer sentiment, for which Mercury Research conducts the national fieldwork. Tracks how households view the economy, their finances, and their spending intentions — a key barometer for market conditions.
The Consumer Confidence Survey is part of the European Commission’s Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys, run monthly across all EU member states. Mercury Research conducts the Romanian fieldwork for this programme, surveying a representative sample of consumers each month.
The survey tracks how Romanian consumers view the general economic situation, their personal financial position, unemployment expectations, prices, and their intentions to save or make major purchases. Results are expressed as balances — the difference between positive and negative responses — and feed into the Consumer Confidence Indicator, one of the components of the EU’s Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI). Because the methodology is harmonised across countries, Romania’s results are directly comparable with those of other EU and candidate countries, making the survey a key reference point for tracking economic sentiment over time and against regional peers.
As of March 2026, Romanian consumer confidence stood at -32 points, continuing a run of negative readings that reflects persistent caution among Romanian households about the economic outlook.
